Check out our April edition of the Paw Print Press!

Aloha KHS Family,

April showers bring May flowers. Here at the Kaua`i Humane Society, we are preparing for the downpour of kitten season.

Kitten season is the time of the year when we become saturated with newborn kittens. Last year KHS took in over 400 neonate kittens and this year we are preparing for similar numbers.

Thanks to a Mighty Cat grant we were able to purchase supplies to help us save the most vulnerable animals in our care, but we are going to need your help to maintain our inventory and lifesaving efforts.

Please tune into our virtual kitten shower and learn what kitten season means at KHS and how you can participate. We are also offering free spay and neuter clinics for cats to help curb future kitten seasons. Prepare yourself for toe beans, tiny tails, and lots of cuteness.

Shortcake is happy about our March numbers. He was adopted this month along with all six of his siblings who were born in the shelter.

March By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 79 dogs and cats, transferred 25 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 43 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

Stay tuned for our spring fundraiser!

Making Every Day A Great Day at KHS

At KHS, we are never sure what our day will bring beyond the feedings, the cleanings, playtime & enrichment activities. Some days we have a momma cat who gives birth in her kennel. Some days we have stray dogs that come in desperately needing a real meal. Other days are spent in the play yards working on social skills. No matter what happens during our day, we need to be prepared for it all. We are launching our Spring Fundraiser and we need your help to make every day a great day at KHS. Your gift will help provide enrichment toys and activities, medical care, play yard enhancements, and so much more. We will be sharing stories of some of the animals in our care and the work we do to keep them healthy and safe while they wait for their forever homes. Be sure to follow us on social media to see all we can accomplish with your help!

Cleo and Bambam are our two featured pets of the month.

Featured Animals: Bambam & Cleo

Meet Bambam: Bambam is a seven-year-old Terrier/American Staffordshire mix with a beautiful brindle coat. He's the most gentle pup out there. He goes on lots of field trips with our volunteers and everyone has fallen in love with this guy. He rides in the car like a champ, listens very well to commands, walks well on a leash, and is content to just hang out wherever you are. He's extremely well-behaved and a sweet cuddler.

Meet Cleo: Cleo is an eight-year-old sweet, sweet girl. She lives in the Blooming Tails thrift shop cat palace with two other cats. On Mondays, when the shop is closed and the manager goes through donations, she lets Cleo roam around the store with her pet dogs. Cleo likes to do her own thing, but is absolutely dog and cat friendly. She's curious about most things and hangs around wherever the activity is. You almost forget she's there until she pops out of a box. She's the perfect combination of cool cat and love bug.

Free microchips for hunters this month!

Free Microchips for Hunters

Hunting is not only a favorite pastime, it's a way to feed families here on Kaua`i, but microchipping a pack of hunting dogs can be expensive. We want everyone to have access to microchips for their pets, which is why we are offering hunters free microchips Friday, April 16 - Sunday, April 18. Just email customerservice@kauaihumane.org to make an appointment.

Dida is our staff spotlight this month.

Staff Spotlight: Dida Kim

“I’ve been working here for a week now. I adopted Scooter, my dog, at the start of COVID and by spending time with Scooter I’ve learned so much about myself and I’ve become a better person. The Coronavirus really made me realize how I want my life to be. I want to be able to spend time with the community and help people. In my neighborhood, pets are often treated as less than family. I see my community and my neighbors. I see how I can help them whether that’s training or just how they can make their dog’s life better. Now I’m fostering Lexi and her puppies and all the neighbor kids come around to play with my dogs, and it’s inspiring to want to change the whole cultural mindset of how you raise your dog.”

Erica is the Kauai Humane Society's volunteer of the month.

Volunteer Spotlight: Erica Tabalba

My daughter, Heidi who is eight and a half now, and I have been volunteering for three years and we’ve fostered for five years. I am making face masks and with the money that I make we take dogs out on field trips about every week. We try to volunteer or take dogs on field trips about three times a week. I was in a dark place when I started volunteering and the animals helped me so much. I felt more confident the longer I volunteered and I wanted to bring my daughter in so she could feel more confidence and more compassion for the animals. Sometimes that’s something animals can only teach. You have to be patient. She likes to go into a shy dog kennel and she feels very happy when the dog trusts her. It’s really working out very well and she loves it.”
