Aloha KHS Family,

This month we are celebrating! We have so much to be thankful for this spring. We are thankful for our generous supporters and donors who donated to our spring fundraiser and those who answered our plea for supplies. Within the last several weeks, we have received close to 1,000 pounds of dog treats for our shelter dogs! We’ve received monetary donations and other supplies our animals need daily like scratching posts, enrichment toys, and dog shampoo. We are heading into spring and into kitten season with confidence knowing that we have a strong community of supporters standing behind us. We cannot accomplish this lifesaving work without you. It truly takes a village, so thank you.

We’re also celebrating all the fun activities we have planned for this month, from our virtual kitten shower and virtual mixology class to our treats and prizes that can be found at the shelter for Easter and Earth Day. We have a multitude of reasons to celebrate!

We hope you’ll join us for some of these fun and exciting events we have planned this month; and as always, we want to extend our warmest aloha and mahalo to you for everything that you do for the animals of the Kaua`i Humane Society.

Sincerely,

Nicole Schafer Crane
Executive Director
Kaua'i Humane Society

March By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 82 dogs and cats, transferred 32 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 27 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all of our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

The Kaua`i Humane Society is entering spring with a renewed sense of purpose as we continue to foster respect, responsibility, and compassion for all animals. We want to share one way you can also begin this season with a similar purpose: creating a will as an act of care for the people, pets, and causes you love. We’ve partnered with a free online tool to help you write or update your will in just 20 minutes so you can secure your future, protect your loved ones, and make a generational impact for the communities close to your heart. Get started now.

Have you included a gift to the Kaua`i Humane Society in your will?

If so, please fill out this form to let us know. We want to say thank you for enriching our community by nurturing healthy relationships between pets and people in your lasting legacy.

We are talking all things kittens! We are sharing how-to videos on basic kitten care, stats into the cost of kitten care for the shelter, as well as stats on our new and improved neonatal kitten program! We hope this kitten shower brings you joy and encourages some new foster volunteers to help care for our wee babes.

Featured Animals: Cleo & Tygah

Meet Cleo: Cleo is a nine-month-old domestic shorthair female tabby. She came into the shelter when she was three-and-a-half-months-old. She's shy and gets along well with other cats. She recently went into foster care and it only took her about a week to adjust to her new environment. Now, she follows her foster mom around, purrs, and loves to be petted. She even comes when called! This just goes to show how important it is to get shelter animals (especially the shy and scared animals) out of the shelter and into a home environment. Now, this shy girl has learned that people are friends and she's ready to go to her forever home. She's been with the Kaua`i Humane Society for almost 200 days, and so her adoption has been sponsored!

Meet Tygah: Tygah is a four-year-old female hound mix with a beautiful brindle coat and deep brown eyes. When she came into the shelter 40 days ago, she was so scared that she would visibly tremble. Meeting new people was an ordeal, and just about everything frightened her. Our staff spent a lot of time with her (and a lot of treats) and now she goes on field trips almost every day! She's great with kids, very gentle and very polite. She walks well on the leash and never begs for food. She's the ideal family dog. She's shown to get along with dogs at the shelter and can often be found cuddling her kennel mate Bambam.

Easter Surprises All Weekend Long!

Stop by the Kaua`i Humane Society this weekend (Friday, April 15-Sunday, April 17) and pick out an Easter egg!

Each egg has a hidden surprise like candy, adoption discount vouchers, and free pet vaccine vouchers!

Who knows, our doggie mascot might even make an appearance for photos!

Happy Easter!

Volunteer Spotlight: Bottle Baby Fosters Needed

It's kitten season! We need bottle baby kitten fosters to help us care for the neonate kittens we intake every day this time of year. We'll give you everything you'll need including supplies and training. Our staff are available by phone during business hours for any questions you may have, and are available after hours for emergencies.

Bottle baby kittens may need fostering between 2-weeks to 2-months, but we are always happy to have any help and will work with you to find you the best shelter match

Follow us on Facebook to learn more about fostering bottle babies!

Staff Spotlight: Cathy Ellis

Cathy has been working with the Kaua`i Humane Society for four years. She started part time work as the Development Assistant, and then quickly transitioned to full time work adding Direct Release Coordinator into her job responsibilities.

For her work in development, she's in charge of processing all donations and the donor thank you letters. As the Direct Release Coordinator, she's responsible for coordinating the arrival of pets coming from the mainland directly to Lihue. It's a time-consuming and very precise process that she makes much easier for those traveling with pets. It's also a critical job in keeping our state free of rabies

Cathy has also fostered more than 80 kittens since 2018 and said that's her favorite part of her job.

"I enjoy being a foster volunteer and seeing my foster kittens find their forever homes," Cathy said.

Earth Day

We are giving out Earth Day treats - compostable doggie bags and felt mice toys! It's important to form environmentally-friendly habits in all areas of life that we can, including our pets!

You can purchase cat litter that comes in a cardboard box instead of a wax bag or plastic tub. You can make your own eco-friendly dog treats instead of buying big bags of them, and you can use these eco-friendly items we'll be giving out on April 23. Small changes can make a big difference!

Year in Review

In case you missed it, we wanted to share with you our 2021 Year in Review Newsletter. This interactive booklet shares some of our proudest moments of 2021! Plus, it describes our big plans for this year. None of this work is possible without you. Mahalo to everyone who's donated and supported the animals at the Kaua`i Humane Society! If you didn't get the chance to donate to our spring fundraiser, but would like to, you can! All of the links in this booklet are still active and will take you to our general donation page.
