Aloha KHS Family,

We are feeling quite festive at Kaua`i Humane Society. We have trimmed our Giving Tree, are Lighting Up the Shelter with our strands of lights, and gifts are already starting to arrive for our good dogs and cats (which is all of them). We are so excited to share our joy and excitement for the giving season with you all. Your support this year has been awe-inspiring. We have adopted more animals, provided more spay/neuter surgeries, supported our low-income and houseless communities, and saved hundreds of neonate kittens. None of which could have been accomplished without you! We cannot wait to jump into 2022 as we continue to grow, develop, and care for the cats and dogs of Kaua`i with you by our side.

Best wishes to you and yours this holiday season,

Nicole Schafer Crane
Executive Director
Kaua'i Humane Society

Leonidas is happy about our September numbers. She was adopted this month from the Kauai Humane Society.

November By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 55 dogs and cats, transferred 54 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 16 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

Mahalo to everyone supporting our animals!

Mahalo For Your Donations!

Giving Tuesday is one of the biggest fundraising events of the year for nonprofits like the Kaua`i Humane Society. We are happy to report that this year we exceeded our goal thanks to generous supporters like you! Thank you!! These funds will go to rescuing animals like Sir Wallace, providing medical treatment to animals like Buffy, spaying and neutering community and shelter animals, helping return pets home, aiding in affordable vaccine clinics for the community, providing refuge to animals in need, and so much more. We could not accomplish this lifesaving work without your support.

If you didn't get a chance to donate Tuesday, but would still like to, click the button below.

Light Up the Shelter

KHS is covered in holiday lights, but they're all turned off!

For every $40 donation we receive, we'll activate 40-feet of holiday lights

Help us light up the shelter by donating to the animals at KHS.

Giving Tree

The Giving Tree is back and this time with a twist!

When you come in to make a donation this month, you'll get to take home an ornament from our Giving Tree. All of our ornaments have photos of our shelter animals on them. Can't come in to make a donation? Click the link below. Mahalo!

Dante and Jacob are our featured pets of the month.

Featured Animals: Dante & Jacob

Meet Dante: Dante is an eight-year-old American Staffordshire/ Hound mix with deep amber eyes. He's been with the Kaua`i Humane Society for 185 days! Fortunately, he's been in one of the most loving dog foster homes with another shelter foster dog, but Dante is ready to find his forever home. He is a very good boy who gets along with other dogs, loves to snuggle and walks perfectly on a leash. He can have a lot of energy when he's playing with his foster sister, but when he comes back inside, he's an absolute couch potato. He's very relaxed and mellow, but loves attention and pets. Dante has been here longer than any other animal at KHS. Let's get him adopted!

Jacob: Jacob came into the shelter when he was about three-months-old. He's now eight-months-old! That means he's been here longer than five months! Jacob was found as a stray and brought into the shelter. As kittens coming into the shelter often do, he was found to have ringworm and so he had to be isolated from the other kitties while receiving treatment. When animals get sick they go to the medical ward, which means they aren't on the adoption floor anymore. Our volunteers primarily socialize with animals on the adoption floor, so those in medical ward don't get as much interaction due to the possibility of contamination. Therefore, he wasn't handled as much and it's caused him to be more afraid of people. He's making improvements every day in regards to his friendliness, but he's still unsure of people and would do well in a patient home that could give him the proper time to warm up and trust people.

Volunteer Spotlight: Robby

Robby has been volunteering at the Kaua`i Humane Society for 23 years! He is one of our most dedicated volunteers. He does whatever we need him to from laundry and refilling supplies to helping at our thrift shop. His favorite volunteering activity is helping with the dogs. Robby is incredibly helpful and always has a smile on his face. It's always a brighter day when Robby is around!

Bridgette is our staff spotlight this month.

Staff Spotlight: Bridgette Semana

Bridgette has worked at the Kaua`i Humane Society as an Animal Care Technician for a year. She works with the dogs or cats, dependent on where she is needed for the day. She has a love for all animals and is a great trainer. She said she loves her work because she loves working with the animals, and she enjoys the company of the people she works with.

Robby is the Kauai Humane Society's volunteer of the month.

KHS supporter, Penny Lee Thompson, generously donated a lifetime collection of jewelry to be auctioned with the proceeds going to support the animals in the shelter. Stay tuned for more auction details in the new year.

Leave a Lasting Legacy

The end of the year is almost here! As you and the people — or pets — you love get together and enjoy the holidays, it’s the perfect time to show your care for the people, communities, and the furry companions that make your life special. So there’s one important task you shouldn't put off for next year: making a legal will to protect your loved ones, assets, and pets!

Though we don’t often think of estate planning this way, the truth is that creating a will is one simple way to make the world a better place, for those you love as well as so many wonderful animals in need of a home. Without a will, you’re missing an important chance to make sure your loved ones and pets will always be cared for.

Whether it is a gift of stocks, an estate, monetary, or even tangible items, your positive impact can last a lifetime.

Year End Celebration

We are so grateful that this year has brought so many successes. Despite the challenges that have risen as well, 2021 has been argubaly the most successful year in KHS history. We beat our previous adoption records, transfer records and returned more animals home than ever before. We were able to provide hundreds of free vaccines and microchips to the public, hundreds of pounds of donated pet food to those in need, and hundreds of low-cost or free spay and neuters. We accomplished the first ever KHS-run transfer flight and found 201 animals new homes on the mainland. We celebrated our most successful gala ever which was also our first virtual gala. We broke ground on the first of several improvement projects to the current KHS facilities. We are so excited to use the successes of 2021 as a stable base to improve and grow upon in 2022. As a nonprofit, we couldn't do this without you and your generous support. Mahalo for your continued support as we celebrate a great year and look forward into the future.
