Aloha KHS Family!

We are thrilled to bring you the first electronic edition of the Paw Print Press, a way to keep up with the people and pets of the Kauai Humane Society!

2019 has been off to an incredible start. As you will see below, we placed 156 animals in adoptive homes or with transfer partners. That means 156 lives were improved and saved because of the hard work of our volunteers and staff. 156 animals are now with loving families because we had donors sponsoring the cost of animal care, spay and neuter, and, in some cases, transfer off the island. It is truly a group effort -- and every member of our KHS family is an essential part of that group.

KHS has also been very active in our community, providing low-cost community spay and neuter surgeries to the public two days a week, as well as providing low cost microchip and vaccine clinics on the first Saturday of each month. Ensuring that our island's pets are happy, healthy, and not creating unwanted litters of puppies and kittens is a high priority for KHS. Our surgery clinics fill up 4-6 weeks in advance so be sure to call ahead of time if you are looking to have a pet altered. Our microchip and vaccine clinics are first come, first serve from 8-11 am.

Of course, caring for so many animals in so many ways is a massive undertaking. Not only are we heavily dependent on our incredible volunteers -- and always looking for more (learn more about volunteering here) -- but we are also looking for staff!!! KHS is currently looking for Customer Service Representatives as well as Animal Care Technicians. If you are interested in learning more about working at KHS, you can read more here.

We are so grateful for all that you do to support Kauai's dogs and cats, from adopting our pets, to volunteering, to donating so we can continue our operations. We simply could not do it without you!

Much Aloha,

Mirah Horowitz

Featured Animals: Pepper Panda and Kappa

Pepper Panda is a gorgeous 5-year old tuxedo cat who has been living at the shelter for a few months. Like many black cats, Pepper often gets overlooked for the cool looking calicos or the eye-turning torties. Pepper may be a bit shyer than some of the other cats on the adoption floor, but she is incredibly sweet. And, she is patiently waiting for a loving forever home.

If you are more of a dog person, Kappa might just be the dog for you! A staff and field trip favorite at the shelter, Kappa is past the puppy phase of getting into everything and anything he can reach, but  at 4 years old he is still young and energetic, a perfect hiking or running partner. Kappa loves people of all ages and plays exceptionally well with other dogs. He truly is one of the sweetest dogs we know and is patiently waiting for his forever family!

A Few Words From Our Featured Volunteer: Kim Foster

To be honest, I was initially worried about volunteering at KHS, because I thought it would make me really sad seeing all the animals in the kennels. Boy, was I wrong. Volunteering and spending time with the dogs on the adoption floor has brought me an amazing amount of joy! Even on days when I am dragging -- or feeling not quite myself -- getting these animals out for a walk or a run makes my day. I have fun, but more importantly, I know I am providing an important opportunity for them to get out and stretch their legs. It's a win-win!

Staff Spotlight: Alex Taogoshi -- Animal Programs Manager

My name is Alex, and I'm the new Animal Programs Manager at KHS. By organizing and overseeing our growing foster and transfer programs, and aiding in counseling our wonderful adopters, I'm hoping to improve and increase the number of positive outcomes available to the animals in our care. I started out at the Kauai Humane Society as an animal care technician and worked my way up to Lead Veterinary Technician. Hard work, devotion, and the help of all of those on my KHS team has landed me the opportunity to give all our animals a better chance for a brighter future. I love being part of KHS because it lets me make a difference in the lives of our community's animals.

KHS Cares: Heartworm Prevention Tips For Pet Owners

Heartworm disease is an easily preventable but deadly disease that all of Kauai's dog (and cat) owners should be aware of. Your dog can become infected with heartworm disease by a simple mosquito bite. The mosquito injects heartworm larvae into the affected animal. The larvae lodge in the animal's heart, and grow into foot-long heartworms. The worms live and grow in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Luckily, heartworm can be combated with a simply monthly pill easily obtained with a vet prescription. Keeping your pet on heartworm prevention is an essential component of keeping your pets happy and healthy!
