Check out our December edition of the Paw Print Press!

Aloha KHS Family,

Happy New Year! 2021 was a record-breaking year for us. We were overwhelmed by your support and ecstatic that we were able to find 2,008 animals new homes through adoptions and rescue transfers. 2021 set a high bar that we plan to not only meet, but exceed in 2022. We plan to continue with all of our current programs and activities and also expand our dog play group program, improve the kennel and cage environments to be more stimulating, and become a greater resource for our Kaua`i community. We come to work every day and ask ourselves 'what can we do for our animals?' Whatever it is our animals need, we know we can accomplish it because of your support. Thank you for being a part of the KHS ‘ohana and we look forward to a 2022 with you by our side.

Sincerely,

Nicole Schafer Crane
Executive Director
Kaua'i Humane Society

Millie is happy about our September numbers. She was adopted this month from the Kauai Humane Society.

December By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 136 dogs and cats, transferred 36 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 47 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

Mahalo to everyone supporting our animals!

Mahalo For Your Donations!

We want to give a huge mahalo to everyone who donated to our year-end fundraiser. Your donations will ensure that the thousands of animals we take in this year will receive the quality care they deserve. Right now, we have more than 300 animals all needing daily food, water, treats, toys, enrichment, training, vaccines, dewormer and flea treatment. Some will need microchips, spay and neuters, and individualized care for medical treatments and behavioral training. Your donations will ensure these animals are taken care of and that staff are able to match them with the perfect family.

Your donations will also go to helping some of these animals transfer to mainland rescue partners for a second chance at adoption. Your donations will also go to allowing us to help our community by offering free and low-cost vaccine clinics, spay and neuters, and free food and supplies to those that just need a little extra assistance. We've got big plans for 2022 and we're so excited to celebrate with you every step of the way! Thank you for your support. If you didn't get to donate to the year-end fundraiser, but would like to donate to the animals, click here!

Featured Animals: Ramsy & Heaven

Meet Ramsy: Ramsy is a two-year-old hound mix with short, black fur, brown feet and eyebrows, and a white chest. This poor fella has been at the shelter for 199 days! Ramsy can be easily overstimulated when around other animals. He's high energy and is incredibly loyal to his person, and so can sometimes get a little jealous when other dogs are around. He's shown potential to be able to enjoy the company of compatible dogs, but we recommend that he go to a home without other pets, and with adults only, unless the home includes someone experienced with dogs who can read his behavior. As with all shelter animals, the behavior of the animal tends to improve drastically once the animal settles into a comfortable home with a stable and consistent routine. Our wish for Ramsy in the new year is to get him into that loving home he deserves and out of the stressful, shelter environment. His adoption has been sponsored by a generous donor and so his adoption fees are waived!

Meet Heaven: Heaven came to the shelter when she was only two-months-old. She came in with her sister Nevaeh who was adopted relatively quickly. Heaven was then alone in her kennel for a couple of months before she went into foster care. Her foster mom says she is a funny girl. Now, at six-months old, her favorite things include playing with ribbon, jumping into the clothes hamper, looking out the window and chasing her foster brother around. She also has an affinity for bags. She's very curious about bags and will slowly edge her way into any tote bag sitting on the floor and fall asleep. She's very quiet and polite, and will only jump onto the bed or couch if invited. Heaven has all black fur with a couple of random white patches on her chest, belly and under one of her arms. She's been with the shelter for 130 days and so we've decided to waive her adoption fees as well.

New Enrichment Activities

We are expanding our enrichment activities for our animals! It is important that the shelter animals stay stimulated mentally and physically every day. The shelter can be a stressful environment for an animal. Living in a kennel, often with other animals, can also be very stressful.

But sometimes, a little peanut butter can make everything all better. Thanks to a generous donation of frisbees, we were able to make DIY peanut butter puzzles for our pups! Hello Peanut Butter Fridays! Click the button below to purchase enrichment tools from our Amazon Wishlist to help us continue to expand our animal activities!

Volunteer Spotlight: Stasea Arnold

Stasea has been volunteering with the Kaua`i Humane Society for two years now. She's taken in lots of foster kittens, supported our programs, and most recently has started fostering ringworm kittens. This is a huge foster volunteer responsibility and one of the most important because kittens needing additional medical treatment heal so much faster when they are out of the stressful environment of the shelter. She's also fostering an adoptable cat, Jenkies, who came into the shelter with head trauma, which has resulted in poor Jenkies suffering from regular seizures. Stasea is working to keep all of these cats healthy and help them find their forever homes!

Staff Spotlight: Jess McEvoy

Jess started as the Director of Finance about three weeks ago. Before moving to Kaua`i to work at the shelter, Jess lived in Alberta, Canada and worked in financial planning. He has a passion for animals, a head for numbers and needed to leave the frozen north, so we welcomed him onto our team! Jess said one of his favorite things about working at KHS is his 10-minute kitten breaks. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking, running, reading, and learning new skills.

This photo is one of many reunions that happened in 2021 thanks to the Kaua`i community stepping up and communicating well on social media. Thanks to our community's outreach on social media, many animals were returned this New Year's holiday without ever having to come into the shelter!
