Aloha KHS Family!

June 30th marked the end of FY19 for the Kauai Humane Society. And, while we are constantly striving to improve, to make things better, and to save more lives, it's a great time to take a moment to celebrate how far we've come in just one year.

One of the most important metrics of a shelter's ability to save lives is its Live Release Rate. This number quantifies how many animals leave the shelter alive. We are tremendously proud of the fact that we increased our Live Release Rate for dogs from 85% in FY18 to 89% in FY19; we increased our Live Release Rate for cats from 39% in FY18 to 51% in FY19; and we increased our overall Live Release Rate from 59% to 68%. These numbers tell an amazing story. A story about how our staff and volunteers have made it a priority to save as many animals as we possibly can.

And, it is a priority that we will continue to work on. To strive for. We are not nearly where we need to be, but we are on the right track.

As part of this journey, we are refining our focus and the services we will be providing to the county in the upcoming year. Using our unique skills and training, we will focus on providing animal rescue and response as well as cruelty investigations. We will be there for the sick, injured, abused or neglected pets. We will work with pet parents to educate them on responsible ownership. We'll bring in abandoned dogs running at large, ensuring they end up in a safe place. And, we'll continue to support the police and fire departments when our animal handling experience is needed.

Yes, our focus and services are changing, but these changes are necessary to further the well being of our island dogs and cats. To help decrease the need for animals to come into the shelter. To focus on our mission of "fostering respect, responsibility and compassion for all animals and enriching lives by nurturing healthy relationships between pets and people."

The fact that these changes are being implemented in July -- in the month where our country celebrates its Independence: its anniversary of embarking on a new life of freedom, is particularly poignant. In this coming fiscal year, KHS is doubling down on our commitment to providing as many animals as possible with a new life. To give them a second chance at a loving family. To give them their independence.

Thank you on behalf of all of Kauai's Dogs and Cats!

Featured Animals: King and Banquo

Meet King: He'll be the KING of your world if you'd just give him a chance!! King is a super sweet 4 year old pit mix who has been waiting quite some time to find a family to all his own. He is incredibly smart, loyal, and LOVES to play with toys.  He would be a great dog to take on walks or to the beach. He would be best in an only dog home -- or perhaps with a submissive friend who won't get up in his face. Please help us spread the word about this incredible boy!

Meet Banquo: This adorable kitten has been at KHS for four months already ... It's time to find him a home! He is incredibly cute, but because he is now 6 months old, he often gets passed over for the little kittens. Banquo would love to go to a home with another cat or kitten but would do equally well on his own. He just wants someone to love. Please help us get this kitten a home!

Volunteer Spotlight: Alyssa Friedberg

I volunteer because I get to help dogs like Crenshaw find their forever homes! I've been fostering him for two months, and this Friday, he will finally get to transfer to a rescue partner in Seattle!  I enjoy so many things at KHS including walking dogs, seeing how the dogs grow weekly, helping write bios and helping with photos. There are so many animals who need homes and while I'd like to keep them all, it's always great knowing that I can help contribute to getting them ready for their new families.

Staff Spotlight: Becky Oishi -- Field Services Dispatcher

Working at KHS is a joy because caring for animals is never a “job”. Everything we do is a passion and a lifestyle. There is something truly special about being able to spend my time saving lives and helping people to be better pet parents. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

KHS Cares: Tips to Keep Your Pets Safe This 4th of July

Fireworks, picnics and other 4th of July traditions can be great fun for people, but all of the festivities can be frightening and even dangerous for animals. Whether or not you're planning your own Independence Day celebration, it's important to take precautions to keep your pets safe both during and after 4th of July festivities.
