Aloha KHS Family,

Serving the people and pets of Kaua`i is an honor and a privilege. It is also exceptionally challenging, even under "normal" circumstances. The world we live in now is far from normal.

Who could have imagined back in March that nonstop flights between Lihue and the mainland which are capable of carrying live cargo would completely stop for months on end? That the only way to transfer animals to mainland rescues and shelters -- or to mainland adopters -- would be via Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines? And that spots on those flights would be in such high demand that KHS would rarely have the chance to book a spot?

Who would have imagined that our shelter, which historically has relied on off-island adoptions and transfers for 50% of our live releases each month, would be able to maintain a live release rate of over 90% for dogs and 80% for cats despite these challenges?

That we have been able to accomplish this is nothing short of a miracle. A miracle made possible because of our incredibly supportive community -- because of YOU.

Don't get me wrong. We're not out of the woods yet.

THE SHELTER IS FULL. We need YOUR HELP to ensure every adoptable dog and cat has their best chance at a forever family.

How can you help?

FOSTER: We are hopeful that the airlines' plans to restart nonstop flights to the mainland from Lihue in August will open up transfer opportunities for our dogs and cats. But, we need fosters who can give them a place to stay until these transfers happen! We are particularly desperate for kitten and adult dog fosters!

FOSTER TO ADOPT: Not sure you're quite ready for a forever dog or cat? Consider fostering with an intent to adopt. This "trial period" gives you a great opportunity to figure out if a dog or cat is a good fit for you while giving us important information about their personality to share with other interested adopters should you pass on adoption.

ADOPT: Ready to take the plunge? We need adopters now more than ever! Help us give a Kaua`i Dog or Cat the kind of life they deserve!

MAKE A ONE TIME DONATION: KHS, like so many other organizations, has lost important revenue sources due to COVID.  Revenue sources that are critical to our ability to keep operating, to keep saving lives. Your donation will ensure that the animals continue to get the care they need during this difficult time.

JOIN OUR  MONTHLY DONORS - THE AMBASSADORS OF ALOHA: Just $1 day -- or $30/month -- can help us provide lifesaving vaccines to a dog or cat in need. Or monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. Monthly donors give us a reliable source of income during these very uncertain times. Every single dollar helps.

VOLUNTEER: Have time to help us walk dogs? Organize fundraisers? Assist with data entry? Sign up with our new volunteer management software -- GivePulse -- and receive our weekly volunteer needs!

We're really proud of how our community has come together during COVID. We're really proud that our care for the animals has not diminished. We know we can continue this incredible lifesaving work. And, we look forward to doing it with YOU!

Mahalo on behalf of all of Kauai's animals,

Featured Animals: Lena & Wendy Testaburger

Meet Lena: Lena is a year old Whippet Hound mix. She is a small girl and resembles a permanent puppy. She came to KHS as a stray with one very sick eye. She has since had that eye removed, but it does not slow her down! She is spunky and sweet, and would do great in a home with children that would play the day away with her. This adorable pup is ready to find her slice of paradise in a loving forever home.

Meet Wendy Testaburger: Year and a half old Wendy Testaburger is a black and white domestic shorthair with bright yellow eyes. She came to shelter when her owner could no longer care for her, and now she is looking for a new place to live. She is friendly and sweet- good with people and other cats. Adopt Wendy and you will have a wonderful companion that is extremely grateful for the kindness you have shown her.

Volunteer Spotlight: Paul Shindell

"Hi, I'm Paul Shindell. I have been walking dogs, fostering dogs, and adopted 3 dogs from KHS over the past 2 years. I like giving them treats, and playing and running with the dogs, especially the big ones. My wife and I find volunteering at KHS to be a good activity to do together, while helping to give back at the same time."

Staff Spotlight: Cathy Ellis -- Development Assistant & Direct Release Coordinator

"Aloha, my name is Cathy and I have been with the Kaua`i Humane Society for 2 years. I have two positions here: I am the Development Assistant as well as the Direct Release Coordinator. Direct release assists pet owners with the process of bringing their animals directly to Kaua`i. It is a rewarding experience, and I enjoy meeting all the owners and their pets when they arrive. In my spare time I foster kittens for the shelter. To date I have fostered 54 kittens since 2018. They are so much fun and it's wonderful when they go off to their forever homes."

KHS Cares: Animal Safety & Fireworks

An abundance of caution could save you major headache and heartache, and keep your pet safe & comfortable this holiday weekend.
