Aloha KHS Family,

It is unbelievable to think that half the year has already come and gone. The first six months of 2021 have been an extremely busy time for KHS, but have also been an exciting time. KHS has already performed more public surgeries in six months (606) than we have in past years. In 2020, KHS performed 439 public surgeries and in 2019 KHS performed 479 public surgeries.

Our owner redemption rates are above the national average and are growing since the passing of the mandatory microchipping ordinance. KHS’s owner redemption rate has previously averaged 6% for cats. This year it is at 8%. The national average is 3% according to the ASPCA. Our owner redemption rate for dogs is now at 38%, compared to the national average of 19%. KHS has also adopted 559 animals this year, which is more than halfway to our goal of 1100 adoptions. Last, but not least, KHS has been able to offer more free vaccines and microchips to the Kaua’i community compared to years past.

All of these amazing milestones would not have happened without your support. KHS is on a roll and we have no plans of slowing down. Even with the almost 400 kittens that have entered KHS this year we only see opportunity to advance our foster program through the utilization of incubators and foster packs and find more forever homes. Join us this week for our Empty the Shelters event where we will assist in matchmaking you with the perfect pet and lowering our adoption fees to $25 for every animal. Help us kick-off the next six months with adoption successes.

Helping the Animals of Kaua`i

Normally, the fall fundraising gala – PAWS for Celebration – is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Unfortunately, we were unable to host the event last year due to the pandemic. We are very excited to announce that this year we have decided to host our first ever virtual PAWS for Celebration.

As you know, KHS relies on donors to support our critical life-saving work for dogs and cats, and to help keep pets and families together. The more funds we can raise at the virtual event, the more animals and pet owners we can help.

Please consider being a sponsor or donating to our auction at our first ever virtual PAWS for Celebration.

If you would like to sponsor this event, or have an item or experience to donate to the auction, please email tanya@kauaihumane.org.

Chloe, Veronica and Vanessa are our featured pets this month.

Featured Animals: Chloe, Vanessa & Veronica

Meet Chloe: Chloe is an 11-month-old sweet and spicy kitty. She can be a sweet little lover when she wants snuggles and she can also be a spicy little pepper when she wants to play! She's not a big fan of other cats, but she was raised around dogs. So, she'd be fine to go to a home with dogs. She has a lot of energy and loves to play with the feather wand to burn off that energy, then she'll nap and be sweet the rest of the day! She is a staff favorite and absolutely spoiled because of it, but we would love nothing more than for Chloe to have her very own home to nap and play in.

Meet Vanessa and Veronica: Vanessa and Veronica are the sweetest pair of six-year-old twin sisters you ever did meet. They came to KHS when their owner moved off island. They are big goofballs and love to steal toys from each other and lounge in a nice sunny patch of grass. They both walk well on leash and would each make the perfect companion. They both love a good adventure just as much as a lazy day. They are nearly identical except that Vanessa has a small white patch on her nose. These sisters would love to go to a home together, but they're also fine to go their separate ways.

Join us for the dog house competition!

Dog House Competition

To help our neighbors in need, we are having a dog house building competition!

What's that?

  • From July 15 - July 31 we are asking our Kaua`i residents to build their own dog houses and bring them into the shelter for the public to judge.
  • The best dog house wins free pet vaccines and a pet-friendly gift bag
  • KHS will then donate the dog houses to community members in need.

Holly is our staff spotlight this month.

Staff Spotlight: Holly Anderson

Holly started at the Kaua`i Humane Society as an Animal Care Technician in March. That means she works with our animals every day to ensure their health and happiness. Her specialty is dogs. She said she wanted to work at KHS because this was a different type of job than others she's had in the past. She said working at the humane society is rewarding because she gets to care for these lost and homeless animals. Holly said watching the long-term dogs make break-throughs with their behaviors and stress-levels and getting to see them finally get adopted is her favorite part of her job. She also said that she likes how tight-knit the community is here and how easy it is to be friends with those that make up the KHS family - both coworkers and volunteers.

Jason and Neil are our volunteers of the month.

Jason & Neil's first foster kittens.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jason & Neil

Normally, we spotlight one volunteer a month, but this power pair is too special to split. Jason and Neil have been photographing the cats and kittens for the website, and fostering bottle baby kittens for four years. They have photographed hundreds and hundreds of cats.

"Photography has always been a passion. I do nature and landscape photography ... So, when we started fostering cats and kittens it was only natural that I would photograph my beautiful little models.

When I learned that KHS was looking for someone to take photos of the cats for the website, I volunteered. Neil became my assistant. He has the most amazing ability to calm the cats and he seems to know just what to do to get them to look cute and cuddly - and to look at the camera," Jason said.

"We do our best to keep the website up-to-date with photos of the new arrivals. Since a lot of people are making an initial decision based solely on the pictures we try to get pictures that show the cats being playful and cuddly to give them the best chance of getting adopted.

Volunteering is such a wonderful and rewarding part of our lives. We recommend it highly - even if it's just an hour or two a week," Neil said.

Humane Officer Fundraiser

  • July 15-31
  • What? We are trying to raise $5,000 to purchase new equipment to keep our humane officers safe and to allow them to do their jobs of catching stray animals in the most efficient and humane ways possible.
  • Our officers work with our local community to help educate the public on local pet laws.
  • Our officers work to help the public keep their pets so they don't end up in the shelter.
  • But there are times when they have to catch stray animals, and we want our officers to have all the tools and resources they need to do their job as safely as possible.
