Aloha KHS Family,

We are just past the half-way mark for Mission Mainland! We still have 60 airline tickets available to send cats and dogs to a home on the mainland. We want to thank all of our donors and supporters for aiding us in this program and helping with our shelter’s overcrowding. Though we enter July with the struggles of a large shelter population and small staff we still have much to look forward to.

On Monday, we are kicking off an adoption event, Empty the Shelters, thanks to the Bissell Pet Foundation which will reduce adoption fees to $25 for cats and dogs, and completely sponsor adoption fees for senior animals. We are hosting another Environmental Enrichment for Indoor Cats Workshop on July 13th, but this time, it will be virtual. Of course, we are most excited about the announcement of our gala, that for the first time ever, is going to be hosted at Kaua`i Humane Society! We cannot wait to see you all there.

Sincerely,

Nicole Schafer Crane
Executive Director
Kaua'i Humane Society

June By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 101 dogs and cats, transferred 69 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 27 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all of our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

PAWS For Celebration 2022

We are very excited to announce that for the first time in several years, we are hosting an in-person gala fundraiser! And, for the first time in KHS history, we are having the gala at KHS! This is an evening you won't want to miss! At this art-themed gala, we'll have art for auction from our children's art competition and from local and celebrity artists, entertainment, dinner, and an opportunity to hear from staff. Presale tickets are available now! Click the button below to learn more.

Children's Art Competition

Children in grades K-12 are encouraged to submit an original piece of art into our PAWS For Celebration art competition! Submissions will be grouped by children's ages for judging, and each group will have a first, second, and third place winner. There will also be an overall winner who will receive $150, plus a ticket for the winner and one parent into the Gala, KHS swag, and more! Everyone who enters wins a prize!

All submissions are due by Sept. 2 and require a Submission Form. Click the button below to learn more.

Empty the Shelters

From July 11-31 all senior animals will have waived adoption fees and all other animals will only be $25 to adopt! This includes the animal's spay or neuter, microchip, and all vaccines! KHS has been overcrowded for several weeks now. We are very grateful to the Bissell Pet Foundation for sponsoring this national event for shelters everywhere.

Featured Animals: Loverboy & LaLisa

Meet Loverboy: Loverboy is a three-year-old Border Collie/hound mix with a zest for life. This guy has a lot of energy and needs a home who can offer stability and consistent training. He would do well as a working dog, if he had the training. Loverboy is very affectionate, loves going on adventures, and is pretty great with other dogs. He just needs lots of mental and physical stimulation to help him stay focused and well-behaved.

Meet LaLisa: LaLisa is almost two-years-old and she is the most loving, affectionate cat. She came into the shelter as a young mother with a litter of kittens and she was the best mother, but all of her kittens have already been adopted! LaLisa has been a great helper cat, aiding in building the confidence of other cats she's been placed with who aren't as brave. She's a sweet girl who gets along with everyone

Volunteer Spotlight: Celia

Celia is one of our most dedicated volunteers. She has been volunteering at the Kaua`i Humane Society for 23 years! Celia said both of her parents were animal lovers, especially her mother. Celia volunteers nearly every day in honor of both of her parents. She loves to give all the dogs treats every day, even on holidays when KHS is closed. She also does the laundry every time she volunteers, which is a HUGE and extremely important job.

Staff Spotlight: Salem

"Hello! I'm Salem and I've been with the humane society since April 9, 2021, and I started as a volunteer. I volunteered so much, that there was a joke of "she practically works here, just hire her already!" and they did just that in July 2021. I'm coming up on my one year of being with Kaua`i Humane this month; and I'm so happy to be here. Animal welfare has been something I've been passionate about since I was very young, and actually starting a career in it is something I'm proud of. There's highs and lows, but at the end of the day I'm happy helping the animals thrive and feel a little better in the shelter. I hope to continue being the best employee, friend, and co-worker I can be."

We are currently hiring for several positions! Click the button below to see all open positions at the Kaua`i Humane Society.
