Aloha KHS Family,

On May 26, the County of Kaua’i signed into law a microchipping ordinance that updated the previous metal tag licensing requirements. Previously, pet owners were required to purchase a new County license every two years to comply with the ordinance. Now, pet owners with a microchipped pet (whether previously microchipped or soon to be microchipped) are in compliance with the ordinance for the duration of their pet’s life, no renewal needed.

KHS offers microchips for $20, but for the month of June, to celebrate the new ordinance, KHS is providing free microchips. If your pet is already microchipped KHS can scan it to ensure the information is up to date to ensure a quick reunification if the pet goes missing.

The new legislation not only saves money for pet owners and the County of Kaua`i but most importantly increases reunification between lost pets and their owners (decreasing stress for all involved).

If your pet is ever lost and brought to KHS or a vet, the pet will be scanned for a microchip. Once KHS has the microchip number, we simply put it into our system and pull up the pet owner’s contact information. The pet is placed on a nine-day hold while we attempt to contact the owner via phone calls and physical mail. Pets without microchips are only on hold for 2 days before they could be adopted into a new home.

Microchipping is a popular practice across the nation. We recommend microchipping your pet(s) no matter where you live to ensure that your pet has a form of identification, they cannot lose, so you can always be reunited with your pet.

May By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 79 dogs and cats, transferred 57 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 41 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

Thinking Ahead

Summer is here! As you and the people — or pets — you love get outside and enjoy the summer heat, it’s the perfect time to show your care for the people, communities, and the furry companions that make your life special. So there’s one important task you shouldn’t take a vacation from this summer: making a legal will to protect your loved ones, assets, and pets! Though we don’t often think of estate planning this way, the truth is that creating a will is one simple way to make the world a better place, for those you love as well as so many wonderful animals in need of a home. Without a will, you’re missing an important chance to make sure your loved ones and pets will always be cared for. Summer is the perfect time for this simple act of care!

KHS Cares - Free Microchips

In honor of the updated county ordinance, we are giving out free microchips throughout the entire month of June.

  • Please register for your free microchip here.
  • Kaua`i County recently updated its pet license ordinance to require all pet owners to microchip their pets instead of purchasing a biennial county pet license.
  • If your pet is already microchipped, it is grandfathered into the new system.
  • It takes only minutes to insert the microchip. You then register the chip online with your contact information.
  • If your pet is ever lost and taken to an animal shelter or vet, they can scan the animal for the chip and pull up your contact information.
  • It is the best way to ensure the reunification of families with their lost pets.
  • This new system will not only ensure more animals find their way home and don't end up in the shelter, but it will also save money for the public, the county, and KHS.

Marley and Lulu are our two featured pets of the month.

Featured Animals: Marley & Lulu

Meet Marley: Marley is a three-year-old labrador/terrier mix. She can be a little shy at first but will quickly warm up. You can tell she's warmed up to you when she starts dancing around your legs and wiggling her behind at you for back scratches. She is an adorable, playful girl who would do best in a home with mellow dogs and older children because she can get nervous around loud noises

Meet Lulu: Lulu is a one-year-old tortie with unique markings and an even more special personality. This sweet girl loves to cuddle and will be your best friend if you give her chin scratches. She loves people and other cats. She's also very vocal and will answer you when you talk to her. She loves to nap in her little hammock bed and she enjoys cuddling her dorm mate, Fairy. She is an incredibly easy-going girl and would do great in a home with other animals or alone.

Sarah is our staff spotlight this month.

Staff Spotlight: Sarah Ouellet

Sarah is coming up on two years of working at KHS this fall as the Director of Finance. She said this is a dream job for her. She wanted to be a vet as a child, but went into accounting because she was good with numbers. Now she gets to use her skills and work with animals at the same time and she loves it. Sarah has been known to take home a bottle baby kitten or two and temporarily house dogs that need a go-between before they meet their next family. She has adopted one cat and two guinea pigs from KHS since she's worked here which her three children and husband (pictured here) love.

Celia is the Kauai Humane Society's volunteer of the month.

Volunteer Spotlight: Celia

I’ve been volunteering for about 20 years at KHS. I haven’t been kicked out yet. I’ve been coming and spending time with the animals. I also do the laundry. I come six out of seven days a week. You guys were always closed on holidays and I would always come in on the holidays because these little guys don’t know that it’s a holiday. I come because these little guys need extra attention, or walks or nibbles and I do it in honor of my parents. I started coming after my mother passed. I wanted to do something I knew my mother would be very proud of and it made my father so happy, so when he passed I continued and now it’s in memory of both of them.

Rukkus was adopted!

Our Longest Stay Dog was Adopted!!

Rukkus has been at KHS for almost an entire year. He was surrendered because his owner moved off-island. His owner told KHS staff that he wasn't great with other dogs nor large men. Staff recognized signs of fear when Rukkus was introduced to men and other dogs. Dogs in the shelter environment can quickly escalate from fearful to reactive, and so in the essence of caution, staff recommended he go to a home with only females and no other dogs. That made placing Rukkus in a home a huge challenge. There are limited homes that can have pets here on Kaua`i and when you add in any type of special need, it makes it that much harder to place an animal in a home.

One of our regular volunteers started taking Rukkus out on field trips. The field trips combined with the work staff and other volunteers have put in with Rukkus made a huge impact on him. He began to be receptive to everyone including men and other animals. His new dad met him when staff had still categorized him as not friendly towards men and so decided not to adopt, only he kept running into Rukkus around town while he was on his field trips and fell in love. Rukkus clearly loves him too. His new dad said it was meant to be. This just goes to show that there is hope out there for every animal that ends up in the shelter. It also goes to show how beneficial taking dogs out on field trips truly is. Click the button below to donate to our field trip program and help create more happy tails like this one.
