Aloha KHS Family,

Thank you all for adopting, fostering, contributing, and sharing our Mission Mainland 2 news. Sixteen animals have already caught their flight to the mainland and have settled into their forever home. Our goal is 125 dogs and cats, so please continue to share the news as our shelter is continuing to take in animals every day.

Kitten season is in full force with more than 100 kittens in foster homes and more than 130 felines at the shelter. Please join us in celebrating June as National Foster A Pet Month and National Adopt A Shelter Cat Month by becoming a foster, adopting an animal, donating to our animals, and/or telling your friends about our programs and wonderful animals waiting on a home to call their own. Wishing you and your furry companions a very happy summer!

Sincerely,

Nicole Schafer Crane
Executive Director
Kaua'i Humane Society

May By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 77 dogs and cats, transferred 48 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 38 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all of our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

Mission Mainland 2.0

In lieu of a mass transfer flight, we are offering off-island all-inclusive adoptions for $150!

We are at critical capacity at our no-kill shelter and are seeing a decrease in adoptions on-island. We need animals in homes! For only $150, we will ship your Kaua`i pet to select West Coast airports. This price includes the animal's spay or neuter, all vaccines, microchip, rabies vaccine, health certificate, travel crate and plane ticket. You just have to meet the animal at the airport.

Participating airports include: Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Jose. We can ship pets to other locations for an additional fee.

Please help us share this message by telling your friends and sharing our social media posts. Our goal is to home 125 animals this way, and so far we have successfully homed 16! That means there's still plenty of opportunity!

We are able to offer two-for-one kittens as well with this deal because two young kittens can comfortably share a travel crate.

Featured Animals: Mo & Carl

Meet Mo: Mo is a two-year-old Labrador retriever/coonhound mix. He was found in the Kokee kennels near the beginning of December and was very fearful of people and other dogs then. KHS staff and volunteers have spent a lot of one-on-one time with Mo, and he was placed in a loving foster home back in February. He has grown confident, walks well on leash, and even interacts well with other playful dogs. His foster mom says he can get feisty and want to play rough at times, so allowing him to get his energy out is important. He's very smart and loves learning. Mo would do best in a home that can give him the attention and training he deserves everyday, whether that's a nice hike or play time out in the yard, accompanied with asking him to perform basic commands and rewarding him with treats!

Meet Carl: Carl is an eight-month-old male tabby cat with an adorable and quirky personality. He's been in a lovely foster home since he was so tiny he could easily fit into a teacup! His foster family calls him Kalaheo! They said he purrs up a storm when he's cuddled and he's a total lap cat. He loves to snuggle and watch TV with his family and he really loves playing with his toys. His favorite toys are his meercat, platypus, and his rolling balls. Carl-Kalaheo came into the shelter as a one-month-old baby. He was found at the Wailua Golf Course all alone and very sick. Now, he's a handsome and healthy island boy, looking for his furever home.

Staff Spotlight: Kirsten

Kirsten has worked at the Kaua`i Humane Society for six months now! She is one of our wonderful Animal Care Technicians who works to care for our animals and gets to know their unique personalities in order to best match them with adopters. Kirsten has worked in both our dog and cat departments, but mostly works with our cat and kitten populations! She said her favorite part of her job is getting to play with the animals.

"I love being able to care for the animals, and I really enjoy everyone I work with."

We are currently hiring for several positions! Click the button below to see all open positions at the Kaua`i Humane Society.

Knitting for Kittens

Join KHS staff from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Friday, June 10 and knit with kittens! We'll have staff members leading this event in honor of National Knit in Public Day. You bring your knitting supplies. We'll bring the kittens!

Adopt A Shelter Cat Month

In honor of National Adopt A Shelter Cat Month (and in honor of our extremely full cat and kitten areas) we are offering two-for-one cats and kittens all June long

This special is for our on-island adoptions only right now. We can offer two-for-one kittens for our Mission Mainland special if they are small enough to share a travel crate.

National Foster Month

We want to thank our foster volunteers for all that you do for us and for the animals! Mahalo!!!! Our foster volunteers are a special kind of people and truly save the lives of the animals they take into their homes. Without our foster volunteers able to take animals who need extra care and love into their homes, those animals might not make it in the shelter environment. It's kitten season right now, which means every single day, we are taking in infant kittens who need to be bottle fed and cared for around the clock. They wouldn't survive on their own without their mother or a caretaker. This May, we took in 143 neonatal kittens. Last May, we took in 108 neonate kittens. This is amazing. We have only been able to save even more animals because of you! We appreciate your work so very much and we have fun plans to celebrate you this month. So, make sure to check your emails for a surprise from KHS!
