Aloha KHS Family,

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms! It doesn't matter if you're a biological, foster, or adoptive mom or if your child has two legs, four legs, fur, feathers, scales, or fins. Being a mom is more than biology, it’s about love.

If you have been waiting to bring a fur child into your home or are ready to add to your family, Kaua`i Humane Society has fur kids of all shapes and sizes waiting for a mom of their own. We have fur kids that love helping with the dishes, going on walks, and binge-watching TV series. No matter what you're looking for we have the perfect addition for your family. KHS offers both in-person adoptions and virtual adoptions for animals staying on Kaua`i and flying across the nation to their new family. From all of us at KHS - Happy Mother’s Day!

Penelope is happy about our March numbers. She was adopted this month from the Kauai Humane Society.

March By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 109 dogs and cats, transferred 46 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 41 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

Mahalo to everyone supporting our animals!

Huge Mahalo!!

We have to tell you a secret ... Our supporters are the best! We have been so moved by the way you have rallied behind the work we are doing at KHS by sharing our stories on social media, volunteering your time, and making life-saving donations. We can't thank you enough for the support. We are still receiving thoughtful gifts through our Amazon Wishlist to help us care for our kittens from our kitten shower. We came so close to our first-ever spring fundraising goal which will allow us to make play yard improvements, continue to provide exceptional medical care, and care for all the dogs and cats that come through our doors! AND - Roca was adopted!!!! After being in the shelter for almost 180 days, thanks to people sharing his story and to Natural Pet Hawaii for hosting his afternoon out of the shelter - he found his new mom, just in time for Mother's Day!

Finding our dogs & cats homes and caring for them while they are here is what we are all about at KHS. We can't do that without passionate pet people like you - thank you!

KHS Cares - National Heat Awareness Day

Join us on National Heat Awareness Day, Wednesday, May 26, for a fun sprinkler/kiddie pool/ iced treat extravaganza in our dog parks. A $5 donation is appreciated! Can't join us? Here are some tips to keep in mind as the weather warms:

  • Don't leave your pets in the car ever, but especially on hot days.
  • Think about your pet's unprotected padding of their feet when walking on hot pavement and sand. Walk in the grass.
  • Your dog can get sunburned too! Use baby-safe sunscreen.
  • Freeze toys or treats in an ice block or bundt cake pan to create a cool treat for your furry friends. Or see if your pet might like a cold piece of watermelon (just make sure there are no seeds.)

Paws for Celebration

We are so excited to announce that we are planning our annual fall Gala event - Paws for Celebration. We were unable to host an event last year due to COVID-19. We've decided to go virtual this year to ensure safety precautions are met. Our Fall Gala is the biggest fundraiser of the year for KHS. It's also a fun way to celebrate our successes and supporters, and share exciting news for the upcoming year. Stay tuned for more information coming soon on our website, emails, and social media pages.

If you would like to donate an auction item or experience, and for more information on sponsorship opportunities please email support@kauaihumane.org.

Pohaku and Buddy are our two featured pets of the month.

Featured Animals: Pohaku & Buddy

Meet Pohaku: Pohaku is a one-year-old ginger Terrier/American Staffordshire mix. He's been at the Kaua`i Humane Society for 101 days. When he first came to KHS, he was incredibly stressed and would pace back and forth all day. Staff and volunteers worked with him to help him deal with his stress. As it turns out, Pohaku is incredibly smart and very treat-motivated which makes for very efficient training. He knows how to sit and shake, and will easily learn more commands. He can be picky about his dog friends and can also be protective over his family so he would do best in a home without other pets unless his new family is very dog suave and can slowly acclimate him to living with other pets.

Meet Buddy: Buddy is a 15-year-old cutie. But, his age doesn't keep him from playing like a kitten. His foster dad says his favorite toy is a rainbow snake attached to a wand. But, Buddy gets camera shy as soon as you try and catch his cuteness on camera. He's a gentle old man who loves to nap and just veg out. He's content to do his own thing all day, but he'll come to seek you out for snuggles and pets when you come home from work.

Sponsor a kennel at the Kauai Humane Society

Sponsor a Kennel

Sponsoring a kennel is an excellent way to support KHS. For $150 a month you can cover the complete costs to care for an animal for one whole month including their food, water, medical expenses, toys, treats, and any additional training or special needs they may have. If the animal in your kennel gets adopted, that just means you've saved more than one life that month! Choose a small dog, a large dog, kitten, or cat kennel and we'll place a plaque on the door engraved with your name and an optional special message. We'll also send you updates on the animals in your sponsored kennel! It truly is a lifesaving gift!

Bill is our staff spotlight this month.

Staff Spotlight: Bill Dejong

Bill started with KHS the last week of April as our new Facilities Manager! He has spent the last 12 years going between Oahu and Iowa working as a United States Coast Guard Licensed 50Ton Masters Captain as well as having a tenured career with the Iowa Department of Transportation and Public Works Department. He has years of experience in facilities and maintenance of Public Works Departments' traffic, water, storms, streets, and managing crews of Oahu coast guard and fishermen to maintenance technicians to government contractors. His wife and Bulldog "Captain Ron" arrive on the island to join Bill in their new home and adventure here on Kauai this week.

Salem is the Kauai Humane Society's volunteer of the month.

Volunteer Spotlight: Salem Cano

“I've been volunteering here for about a month. I usually hang out with the cats and help out wherever I’m needed. Sometimes I help out with the dogs or front desk. I always wanted to help with animals ever since I was young and I’ve always aspired to be a vet. I sometimes feel like I can understand animals better than people because they’re more straightforward. I just love animals and I love helping them.

Join the Kauai Humane Society for virtual yoga!

Yoga with Furry Friends

We're hosting our monthly virtual yoga class, but this time there's a surprise! Perhaps, we'll be joined by a litter of rambunctious kittens. • 3 p.m. HST Sunday, May 23
  • Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased on our Facebook event page.
  • The event is hosted on Facebook Live.
  • All proceeds from these events go directly to the animals at the Kauai Humane Society.
  • No equipment is necessary and all levels are welcome.
  •  Buy your ticket here.
