Aloha KHS Family,

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! Whether your kids have two legs or four legs, fur, feathers, or scales, you deserve to be celebrated for the love and care you provide.

KHS is offering Mother’s Day gift boxes full of Kaua`i goodies that will make mom feel pampered.

For new feline moms (and dads), KHS is co-hosting a workshop for cat owners who want to learn more about cat behavior/training and making a fun and healthy home for your cat. This is our first workshop and we are very excited to talk about everything from litter boxes to catios. Happy Mother’s Day!

Sincerely,

Nicole Schafer Crane

Featured Animals: Nintendo & Blaziken

Meet Nintendo: Nintendo is a four-year-old male hound with lots of energy. He's an active dog who loves to go on field trips to hike or run around the beach. He is a cuddle bug and will try to tempt you into cuddling him by leaning onto you and looking up at you with those soft, brown eyes. He's got it down to a science! He's been at the shelter for 176 days, so his adoption is sponsored. He's had a lot of almost adoptions and every time all of his friends at the shelter get so excited for him, but there's been a string of unforeseen circumstances that has kept this good boy at the shelter. When he first came to KHS, he was not the best with other dogs, but he's come a long way with his training. Now he knows basic commands and is very attentive to his person. He would do best with an active family.

Meet Blaziken: Blaziken is a one-year-old female orange tabby. Blaziken is special for two reasons. 1. It's not very common for an orange tabby like Blaziken to be female. Most orange tabbies are males! 2. Her birthday is on Halloween! Blaziken is a very shy girl who's starting to come around to understanding that people are friendly and often come with snacks! She really enjoys napping in her favorite hammock and doughnut plushy bed. She also really enjoys snuggling her kitty roommates. She's been at the shelter for more than 220 days, so her adoption is sponsored! We just want this sweet girl out of the shelter and into a loving home. She would be an excellent pet for someone who's not looking for an incredibly needy pet, and is willing to offer patience and treats until she warms up fully to her new environment.

Volunteer Spotlight: Laura Canciamilla

Laura started volunteering in 2019. She mainly worked on writing bios for the animals, taking their photos for the website, and of course, the most important job - laundry. She took a break during the COVID shutdown for a while, but now she's back and helping to write bios for the website, as well as helping with our BookTails reading program every other Friday.

Laura was a teacher for 50 years and worked every position from high school teacher to vice principal, and then principal! She was one of the first female principles in Benicia, California.

"I love seeing the animals trust you and get comfortable with you," Laura said. "It's the most incredible affirmation when they can trust you like that."

Staff Spotlight: Courtney Still

Courtney has worked at the Kaua`i Humane Society's thrift shop, BloomingTails, for one year. She was just recently promoted to store manager!

She said she is grateful to have found work during the pandemic and she loves that the work she performs every day helps support the animals at the shelter

"Thrift shops and animals were a no-brainer for me," Courtney said. "Shout out to the staff at the shelter and the solid staff I work with at BloomingTails for showing me why I love to do what I do here."

Blue Tiki Flash Sale

We are partnering with our friends at Blue Tiki Tattoo in Kapa`a to have a two-day flash tattoo sale! Tattoos cost $60 and $50 from each tattoo will benefit the Kaua`i Humane Society. If you bring a donation of pet food for the shelter to the tattoo shop, you'll receive $10 off your tattoo!

Friday, May 13: 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Saturday, May 14: noon - 7 p.m.

Walk-ins welcome. The shop is located at 440 Aleka Place Unit 6, Kapa`a.

Empty the Shelters

We are so excited that the Bissell Foundation is sponsoring another Empty the Shelters event! This time it's running from May 2-15. All senior animals are free and all other animals are $25!

This adoption price includes all vaccines, spay or neuter, flea and tick preventative, dewormer, and a microchip.

We have a full shelter, especially now with kitten season. We are taking in anywhere from 3-10 kittens a day. Help us empty the shelter! If you've been thinking of adopting, now is the time!

Rupert here is an adoptable KHS cat currently in foster care. His foster has taught him to wear a harness and leash so that he can enjoy the outdoors while being properly supervised.

Environmental Enrichment for Indoor Cats Workshop

We are partnering with Pacific Birds, NOAA, and the County of Kaua`i to offer our community educational resources on the importance of keeping domesticated cats indoors. We are excited to announce our first workshop on Saturday, May 14.

What: This is an interactive workshop where we’ll learn how to provide enrichment for your indoor cats. Plus, you'll take home a free gift for your cat!

Where: Kaua`i Humane Society, 3-825 Kaumuali`i Hwy, Lihue

When: 9 - 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14

Why: Keeping your cats indoors will ensure they live long, happy, and healthy lives. There are dangers to allowing your cat to roam freely outdoors such as stray dogs, cars, the chance they could go missing, and disease. They're also a potential threat to our special endangered and native bird populations. We love all animals, and we want what's best for them all!
