Check out our November edition of the Paw Print Press!

Aloha KHS Family,

As the holidays near, we reflect, even more, on what we are thankful for. KHS has so much to be thankful for this year. We are thankful for the KHS community near and far that support our programs, staff, and animals. We are thankful for our fosters and volunteers that take time out of their busy lives to help the homeless animals of Kaua`i. We are thankful for our adopters that give our animals a wonderful and loving home.

At the start of the year we set an adoption goal of 1,100 adoptions. This would be more than any other previous year. We are starting November with 1,153 adoptions already completed! This could not have been accomplished without our community’s support (sharing our posts and recommending KHS), fosters caring for animals until they were ready for adoption, donors sponsoring adoptions and the care of the animals while they wait for adoption, and the families that grew their family with a new furry addition. Thank you all for your continued support and happy Thanksgiving!

Leonidas is happy about our September numbers. She was adopted this month from the Kauai Humane Society.

October By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 159 dogs and cats, transferred 79 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 19 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

Mahalo to everyone supporting our animals!

Mahalo For Your Support!

We are so grateful for all of the support, donations and volunteer time we have received this year. This year has been a groundbreaking one for KHS and we couldn't have done it without generous supporters such as yourself. The reason we are able to do the work that we do within our community is because we are backed by generous people who care to make a difference. Every single act of selflessness and kindness is appreciated and noticed. Whether you foster bottle baby kittens, take dogs on field trips, or just share information about the work we are doing, it all helps move the mission forward and makes all the difference.

Mahalo from all the pets and people at KHS.

Home for the Holidays

Take a shelter pet home for the Thanksgiving holiday. Share the love this season, and maybe share a little bit of turkey too. KHS is closed on Thanksgiving Day, so by taking a shelter pet home, you're giving the animal much more attention than it would get at the shelter.

Pick up Wednesday, Nov. 24 or before and

Drop off Friday, Nov. 26 or after.

We'll give you everything you need to care for your holiday buddy for as long as you wish.

If you fall in love and decide to adopt your new friend, we'll discount their adoption fee 50% off.

We can all agree that snuggling an animal in need is the best way to spend that after-dinner nap, especially when our shelter animals are all professional nappers.

(See photo of adoptable kitten Rivalea for reference.)

Skippy, Doja & Buffy are our featured pets of the month.

Featured Animals: Skippy, Doja & Buffy

Meet Skippy: Skippy is a nine-year-old male Labrador retriever mix. Skippy is a mellow dog who walks well on a leash, and gets along with other dogs. However, he would do best in a home without other dogs because he likes to be head honcho and because he can be easily startled by quick or sudden movements. He's still learning that people can be kind and friendly, but he's learning this more every day. Getting him into a stable, quiet forever home will do him a world of good.

Doja & Buffy: Doja (left) and Buffy (right) did not come into the shelter together, but they have grown up together in the shelter and love each other very much. It would be amazing if they could go to the same home. Doja is a six-month-old girl who was picked up in Anahola and brought in as a stray when she was just a teeny thing. She was such a shy girl and was very visibility stressed in the shelter. But, then came along Buffy about a week later. The two bonded and although, they are both very shy, they are inseparable. It's as if they act as the other's security blanket. Buffy is a seven-month-old girl who was found in Lihue and also brought in as a stray. These two are very shy, but have been making impressive improvements lately, even coming to the front of the kennel to play with passerby. Getting them into a home and out of the shelter environment would help them truly blossom.

Kelli is our staff spotlight this month.

Staff Spotlight: Kelli Jones

Kelli has worked with KHS for about a month now as our new Animal Programs Coordinator. She previously worked behind the scenes in the seed lab with the National Tropical Botanical Garden. She said she came to KHS because she wanted to stay within the nonprofit realm, but transition to more hands-on work. She's been volunteering with humane societies since she was eight-years-old and felt that this was a way to make a tangible impact within the community. Kelli said she's thankful for our foster volunteers who have shown her how kind and generous people can really be.

"I've had three separate occasions where I've become teary-eyed just because of how nice and good people are, and to see how much they care about these animals."

Barbara is the Kauai Humane Society's volunteer of the month.

Volunteer Spotlight: Faith Harding

Faith has been volunteering at KHS since April. She comes once a week to help with administrative tasks, bag up foster supplies, play with kitties and just do whatever needs to be done. She also regularly helps answer questions on social media channels and helps navigate people to the right place, in addition to helping with special events. She said she had an epiphany with her own cat Homie in which she realized that we are all sentient beings capable of knowing and feeling love, and was thus inspired to volunteer with the shelter animals.

"I am thankful for so much. Grateful for my life on Kauai, the beauty of where I live, my friends who are my ohana here, my ohana on the mainland and to KHS for all the incredible work you all do in saving lives!"
