Aloha KHS Family,

It is only the first week of October and we are already halfway through our Empty The Shelters event where we are offering reduced adoption fees, we have kicked off a second Mission Mainland with off-island adoption fees reduced to $300 thanks to a generous donation by the DeSantis ohana, and Greater Good Charities’ Good Fix program is back and is spaying and neutering cats at no cost to the Kaua`i community.

Also, our PAWS for Celebration was a great success thanks to you. We loved having everyone at KHS and celebrating in person. Thanks to your support we were able to purchase all of the requested supplies including a dental machine! We can hardly wait for its arrival as we expand the care we provide to our shelter animals and to our community.

Sincerely,

Nicole Schafer Crane
Executive Director
Kaua'i Humane Society

September By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 127 dogs and cats, transferred 63 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 29 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all of our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

PAWS For Celebration 2022

Mahalo to everyone who came out to the PAWS For Celebration 2022 Gala and to all who supported, and we want to give a special shoutout to our primary sponsor Koloa Rum. This was the first in-person gala we've been able to host in several years and it was a huge success. With the donations we received at the event we are going to be able to purchase all of the requested supplies including a much needed dental machine. We'll soon be able to provide improved dental care to our shelter animals and public pets through the Community Care Center. Mahalo to all who made this event so special!

Featured Animals: Wringy & Dexter

Meet Wringy: Wringy is a six-month-old domestic shorthair male who is so very calm and extremely cuddly. He loves to be held especially like a baby or on his back. He also loves belly rubs. He's not afraid of loud noises or sudden movements, and he loves to play, especially with his best friend Wood Chips. Wringy is a whole mood. He would be an excellent family pet because he gets along with everybody, loves attention, and loves to play with others. Wringy has been at the shelter since he was a kitten, so his adoption is sponsored!

Meet Dexter: Dexter is a four-year-old male Catahoula Leopard dog who can be a little shy at first, but once he warms up to you and with enough treats, he'll show you just how sweet he is. He secretly loves to cuddle. Once he rolls over for a cuddle, that's how you know you're in with Dexter. He enjoys the company of other dogs, but just like with people, it may take a little time for Dexter to warm up to new company. He's very treat-motivated, so that's the way to his heart. This poor guy has been in the shelter for more than 252 days. His adoption has been sponsored by a generous donor.

Volunteer Spotlight: Deborah Parkinson

Deb has been volunteering for a couple of months now at the shelter and she's also taken home some bottle-baby kittens (those are her kittens in the photo!). Deb has retired from working in the medical field and said volunteering gives her a sense of purpose and gets her out of the house. After her first foster experience with bottle babies, she said she absolutely plans to continue fostering because she enjoys the fact that she gets to love on the animals for a time, and then give them back, much like grandparenting. That is one of the beautiful perks of foster volunteering - you get to give them back and then help even more animals!

Staff Spotlight: Tony Miller

Tony has been a Humane Officer for KHS for a little more than two years now. He was recently promoted to Lead Humane Officer. Tony said his favorite part of working at KHS is helping to improve the lives of pets here on Kaua`i and he enjoys the community outreach part of his job.

"My main goal is to offer support and education to our community," Tony said. "The last thing I want to do is cite someone."

Tony said, as a Humane Officer, he wants the community to "please have respectable conversations with your neighbors when it comes to pet issues with them. Get your pet microchipped and have an I.D. tag on them. If your pet gets out or gets lost, I would much rather bring them back to your home than to the shelter."

Community Care Center

Due to high demand, we are extending the hours of our Community Care Center. The Care Center will be open every Tuesday and Sunday from 12:30-5 p.m. beginning this Sunday. The Care Center is open to owned cats and dogs, and is operated on a walk-in basis.

Vaccine Clinics will continue to operate by appointments every Tuesday from 10 a.m. - noon, and every first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Trick or Treat, Give Me Something Good to Eat

This year for Halloween, instead of treats, we are requesting donations of dog and cat food for our Gomez Galley Pet Food Bank. We are seeing an increase of need for pet food in our community, and our pet food bank is running low. From Oct. 24-31 if you bring in a donation of pet food, we'll give you a human treat!

KHS 2023 Calendar Fundraiser

You submitted your cutest pet photos and voted on the top 13, which made it into the 2023 KHS calendar! Now, we're selling these calendars for $25 at KHS and on our online BloomingTails thrift shop website. Visit KHS to purchase a calendar and check out all of our other merch for sale, or click the button below to purchase your calendar online and we'll ship it to you. All proceeds from the photo submissions, voting, and calendar sales benefit the shelter animals!
