Check out our October edition of the Paw Print Press!

Aloha KHS Family,

We were hoping this October was going to be all fun and games, but instead it is becoming quite spooky. After Mission Mainland we had a cat population that allowed us to offer spacious cages and a lot of individual attention. Now, just over a month later, we have more than 330 cats in the shelter and are fast approaching a cat population of 400 felines.

We are not frightened! We have a plan. Cats in costumes, adoption fee specials, and low-cost mainland flights for adopted cats. Keep scrolling to read about all of our fun Catober events and let us help you find the perfect feline friend! Our kitties are waiting for their party invitation and they do not want to be late, so please adopt or sponsor a transfer flight.

September By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 140 dogs and cats, transferred 21 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 27 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

Mahalo to everyone supporting our animals!

Catober on the Mainland!

Our recurring nightmare is haunting us once again. The shelter is full with over 330 cats in our care. To help them all find homes we are offering some spooky specials. For mainland adopters we have created a special potion in our adoption cauldron that includes: Flight*, adoption fee, carrier to keep, health certificate, and vaccines, for only $250!!

So, if you are ready to be a “mummy” (or daddy) we can help you pick “witch” cat to add to your haunted house. We have calico princesses, dudes in tuxedos, purring pirates, and so many more to choose from (not just black cats).

Contact KHS today so we can pack their broomstick and you can cackle with delight when you meet your new furry “monster”.

See our adoptable cats here: kauaihumane.org/adopting/cats-available

* $250 includes flights to Seattle (SEA), Portland (PDX), San Diego (SAN), San Jose (SJC), Oakland (OAK), and Los Angeles (LAX)

Other airports would incur additional costs

Cuscino and Hemingway are our two featured pets of the month.

Featured Animals: Cuscino & Hemingway

Meet Cuscino: Cuscino is an eleven-month-old male tuxedo hunk. With his bow tie on, he's ready to conquer the world. Whether that means defeating bad guys or just killing the bugs that try to intrude upon your home. Cuscino came to the shelter as a very shy teenage kitten and has lived in his kennel ever since. He gets along well with other kitties, but needs time to warm up to people. This sweet boy has been at the shelter for 152 days. Getting him into a home, whether his forever home or a temporary foster home, would do him so much good. He is not thriving in the shelter environment and needs to go to a calm home and a patient family. With time, love and treats, he's sure to blossom into a loyal and loving friend.

Meet Hemingway: Hemingway is an eight-year-old Labrador retriever/hound mix. Don't let his graying muzzle fool you, he's just as spry as the younger pups. He loves to run and play in the ocean, or any kind of water really. He knows how to sit, heel, come, down, stay and wait. He came in with a friend who was adopted. This sweet boy is in foster care, fortunately, but he's now one of our longest stays! He's been at KHS for 124 days. Let's get Hemingway adopted!

Bill is our staff spotlight this month.

Staff Spotlight: Launa Bacon

Launa is the KHS shop manager at the BloomingTails Thrift Store. She started with KHS as an animal care technician, then moved over to the front desk and then into management. Launa has been a long time KHS foster many years before working with us. She continues to foster several kitties at the "pawlace" in BloomingTails, and is always fostering an animal (or sometimes a whole litter of kittens) in need of some extra love at home. She said she really enjoyed working with the animals and misses that, but has also enjoyed setting up the new store in the new location and enjoys making money for the shelter.

All proceeds from BloomingTails directly benefit the animals at KHS.

"I'm seeing the difference you make in animals' lives and people's lives as well.

Barbara is the Kauai Humane Society's volunteer of the month.

Volunteer Spotlight: Barbara Bacon

Barbara has been volunteering with KHS for several years. She started with caring for the cats and then moved into surgery. She is one of two volunteers that work in the vet department helping our small vet team with whatever they need while performing spays and neuters for shelter animals and public pets! Barbara said she volunteers once a week because she enjoys the KHS staff that she works with and enjoys helping the animals. Our vet team is small, but they are mighty and we appreciate Barbara's consistent help so much!
