Aloha KHS Family,

Yesterday was the grand opening of Kaua`i Humane Society’s Community Care Center! After witnessing an increase in owner surrenders due to pet owners not being able to afford medical care or not having access to medical care for their pets we knew we needed to help. Medical services for pets are limited on Kaua`i and we want to help our new adopters and pet owners succeed as responsible pet owners. PetSmart Charities graciously sponsored the Community Care Center and helped us get started by preparing a space to house the Care Center and order our initial supplies, while also assisting us in a medical fund for pets in need. We are very excited to see what this one-year pilot program is able to accomplish.

We will have the veterinary staff in attendance at our PAWS for Celebration Gala on October 1st to share all the wonderful client stories we have seen so far. It is hard to believe our gala is less than a month away! We are all very excited about the delicious Kiawe Rotos menu, the refreshing Koloa Rum cocktails, the amazing fire entertainment, the creative student art, and the incredible auction items. We are looking forward to showing off our shelter grounds and showcasing our programs. We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Nicole Schafer Crane

August By The Numbers

Last month, KHS found homes for 105 dogs and cats, transferred 50 animals to our mainland partner shelters, and reunited 30 animals with their families.

MAHALO to all of our amazing volunteers, staff, and supporters who helped so many happy tails come true!

PAWS For Celebration 2022

There's still time to get your tickets to the 2022 PAWS For Celebration gala fundraiser! This year the gala will be held at the Kaua`i Humane Society for the first time ever! Your ticket includes dinner and drinks catered by Kiawe Roots, local breweries and distilleries, live entertainment including fire dancing and live music, a chance to learn up close and personal about the exciting new programs and services offered by KHS, plus access into some incredible auctions. All proceeds benefit the animals. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and one of the most entertaining ways to support KHS all year long, so don't miss out!

Free Adoption Event

  • Friday, Sept. 16-Sunday, Sept. 18
  • Free adoptions
  • Sponsored in part by Best Friends Animal Society
  • Help bring home happiness and help make some space at the Kaua`i Humane Society. We are very full of lovely animals all looking for forever homes like Jamie pictured here.

Online Auction Fundraiser

Can't make the gala in person this year? That's ok! We are offering an online auction which will be live September 20-28 so you can still support KHS from afar (or close by). We have had some very generous donations to this auction such as golfing experiences, Kaua`i hotel stays, a Cosmo magazine signed by Beyonce, and many more interesting, one-of-a-kind items.

Stay tuned! We'll be emailing the link out soon!

Featured Animals: Kailah & Akamai

Meet Kailah: Kailah is a nine-year-old, female, domestic shorthair. If you walk past her kennel without saying hello, she'll ask you to stop by and chat for a moment with her adorable little mews. She is affectionate and sweet, but can be particular about her company with other cats because she is a big girl and likes to play rough with other cats. She was surrendered because an expecting mother was nervous about Kailah's rough play mannerisms around the new baby, but she would be fine around older children and around cats who don't mind a paws-on kind of play. She's a very friendly girl and the perfect lap cat

Meet Akamai: Akamai is a two-year-old, male, Catahoula Leopard/hound mix with a beautiful brindle coat. He was surrendered to KHS with his brother who was adopted a couple of months ago. Akamai enjoys the company of other dogs, and is searching for another fur sibling. He deserves to be in a home receiving love every day. His previous owners said he knows the commands sit and gentle for taking treats, is great around kids, and his favorite snacks are watermelon and cucumber. He can be unsure of strangers, but once he gets to know you he's very friendly and sweet. He is super food motivated, so consistent training with yummy treats will turn this pup into the most loyal pet in no time!

Volunteers Needed!

The Kaua`i Humane Society needs your help! We recently lowered the volunteer age to allow for more friendly faces to lend helping hands! Volunteers between the ages of 16-18 no longer need a parent or guardian in order to volunteer, but will need a signed permission slip. Now, volunteers between the ages of 10-15 can volunteer with a parent or guardian! We have tasks for all ages! From providing enrichment to the animals to providing clean and safe spaces for the animals to thrive in, we appreciate your help! The first step is to sign up for a Volunteer Orientation.

The next orientations are scheduled for:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sept. 25, at 9 a.m.

Staff Spotlight: Dr. Calley Hille

Meet Dr. Hille, our new Director of Shelter Medicine! Dr. Hille has lived on Kaua`i for four years with her husband on their farm. Dr. Hille was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina where she started a low-cost, high-volume vet clinic 23 years ago. She continues to run the clinic remotely and will now take over our shelter medicine operations. She said her favorite part of working at KHS so far is working with a staff who are all very passionate about the animals and happy to be here.

"I wanted to get involved in our community here and I saw a need for more veterinarians and more affordable care for the pets on the island."
